ABOUT LAKE WALLENPAUPACK
Facts and history of beautiful Lake Wallenpaupack...who
wouldn't want real estate here?!?
|
| |
 |
| |
| Lake Wallenpaupack is
the most amazing body of water in all of
Northeastern Pennsylvania...it provides
52 miles of unspoiled shoreline,
is 13.5 miles long and contains
2.5 billion gallons of water.
No, that's NOT a typo! The term 'Wallenpaupack'
comes from local Lenape Indian dialog and
roughly translates as 'the stream of swift and
slow water'. Lake Wallenpaupack is man made,
created by Pennsylvania Power and Light in 1926
as a hydro-electric generating facility. PP & L
still owns most of the shoreline, and though the
hydro-electricity is now only used to supplement
power during peak usage, the lake has become a
HUGE tourist attraction that continues to
provide much economic benefit to Wayne and Pike
Counties. |
| |
| The lake was formed
by damming Wallenpaupack Creek, which
was a beautiful stream with many deep water
lagoons and whitewater rapids. The land
it is build on dates back to William Penn,
and his estate transferred the 12,150 acre
parcel to James Wilson (signer of the
Declaration of Independence and the
Constitution) in 1793. Believe it or not an
entire town lies beneath it in some places,,,the
maximum depth of Lake Wallenpaupack is
60 feet and its bed fills 5700
acres. |
| |
| For your enjoyment, there are
six recreation areas around Lake
Wallenpaupack, all featuring hundreds
of acres of forest, wildlife, walking trails,
campsites and boat slips. And, of course, there
are the thousands of homes that line the shores,
most of them with docks. PP & L prohibits
the sinking of pilings and the construction of
anything permanent, so your dock must be a
floater. The lake level fluctuates during the
year as PP & L lets out water into the
Lackawaxen river, the highest level coming in
late spring and the lowest in the fall. There
is even a free public boat launch ramp
that the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat commission
maintains. It's located off of Route
590 right near the dam. There are other
launches that are open to the public, but a fee
is charged for usage. |
| |
| PP & L operates a
learning center off of Route 6 near the dam,
sponsoring events and holding classes that
benefit the community. One of the absolute BEST
events is the 4th of July firework
celebration held at Lake Wallenpaupack...people
come from miles around and states away to see
the incredible display, and the entire lake
surface is nearly covered with boats and other
watercraft. It's an incredible sight! |
| |
| Do note that Lake
Wallenpaupack has no horsepower
limitations, so your toys are welcome.
There is a speed limit of 45 miles per
hour, though, and yes, it IS enforced.
Patrols to prohibit boating under the influence
are present as well. Take care! |
